Congregational Church of the Messiah

A Church where thoughtful people worship.

Freedom

Our Church stands in the Pilgrim traditions of independence of the local Church and of freedom of the individual conscience - the two freedoms for which the Pilgrims came to this country in 1620. Each member is free to worship God and to implement Christ's command to love God and neighbor in his or her own way.

Our Church is truly congregational; that means it is self-governing and independent of all other ecclesiastical authority. We are of "the Lord's Free People." We believe that Christ is the head of each local Church, following His saying, "For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them." (Matthew 18:20)

Fellowship

Messiah members accept the basic teaching of Christ: to love both God and man. The tie that binds us to other Congregational Churches - regionally, nationally, and internationally - is fellowship, a free relation of affection.

We are a member of the National Association of Congregational Christian Churches (NACCC), bound together by love, fellowship and worship as we are to one another. To learn more about the NACCC, please visit their web site at http://www.naccc.org.

We freely associate with other Westchester Churches as well, to share God's light and love and to work for God's purposes.

Prayer

We are a prayer-centered Church. For us the function of worship is to bring the worshipper into touch with God, and so provide him with the inspiration which will move him to work for those causes which seem good to him. By calling the Church, you may request our "band of prayer" - a group of caring members - to pray for you or for loved ones in need.

Oratorium

We are perhaps the only Church in Los Angeles with an Oratorium - the little building in front of the Church built for the purpose of prayer for one or a few persons. Everyone, not only members, is welcome to use the Oratorium, which is unlocked during the day. Members are given keys to enable them to use the Oratorium at night.

Missions

We believe in sharing our faith in practical ways with others through our mission outreach. We contribute to missions both in our own community, Country, and in other lands.

Programs

We have Sunday school classes for children and we provide child care for infants and toddlers.

We are proud of our music program: Soloists, voice and bell choirs, and a guitar ensemble are heard Sundays and throughout the year. All groups are open to anyone who wishes to participate. Free guitar classes are open to anyone who is interested.

A prayer group meets every Wednesday followed by Early Birds Bible Study at 9:00 a.m.

There is a service group called Guild of Service. There are adult social groups: Congregators (evening) and Band of Merry Christians (daytime). These groups meet monthly. In addition, special groups are formed for specific purposes. Our facilities are available to community groups upon approval of our Board of Directors.

At least once a year, a Church retreat is held in Valyermo and is open to all.

You can find more information on these and other programs our church offers by clicking on the following hyperlink: Activities.
